Taiwan mountain resort are actually quite rare.
In the last decade Taiwan has been working very hard to promote the island as a major tourist destination. Yet, it seems most Taiwanese still don’t understand the treasure they have in their mountains. Green, rugged and mostly unspoiled, Taiwanese mountains are, for many foreigners, much more appealing than the cities.
Access points to the mountains are few and sparse. There are not so many modern good hotels. The most appealing of them still date from the Japanese time or from Chang Kai Shek.
Accommodations in the best places (national parks and recreation areas) are often aging.
Basian Villas Taiwan Mountain Resort
So it was quite a surprise when, some time ago, during one of our trips to Basianshan Recreation Area, we found that the cabins have been completely renovated, in a tasteful way.
Since then (September 2014), Hung’s Mansion have been managing Basianshan accommodations, which are now called Basian Villas. Hung’s Mansion is considered one of the best hotels in Taichung (very good value for money). It is privately owned, not a chain. The son of the owner has actually been running Basian Villas, since the renovation.
Basian Villas are different from the Taiwan mountain resort you may have seen before. They are new … and cozy and clean.
The main building is the focal point of Basian Villas. There you can find a neat modern restaurant, that provides good Chinese meals, including breakfasts. Nothing exceptionally fancy, but, anyway, much better than the food normally served (if any) at the others restaurants in National Recreation Areas and similar places.
Just outside, facing the valley, there is an outdoor coffee shop. That is the ideal place to sip a coffee and relax, amid trees and cicadas.
Basian Villas rooms and cabins are scattered along the slope above the 1st parking and Basianshan Visitors Center.
We stayed in one of the closest to Basian Villas Reception and Restaurant. You can see the pictures below.
Some cabins instead are located above the 2nd upper parking, in a more secluded environment. There are different sizes available (our cabin was for 4 person with two rooms, some others are either for couples or for large families).
Basian Villas Tips
Basian Villas are at about 900 meters of altitude, in Basianshan Recreation Area. They are very close to Guguan (several hot springs hotels there). It is easy to get there from Taichung, which is only 60 kms away. They are also not far to Dasyueshan Recreation Area and Lavender Farm.
Basian Villas rates can be quite higher during weekends and, especially, during the high season (part of the summer and Chinese New Year). At those times Basian Villas are often fully booked. They are much cheaper during the week, normally.
How to Reach Basian Villas
If you are with your own vehicle (better), you just have to drive along the Dajia River valley, on National Road #8. One km before Guguan, after a bridge, turn on the right, and follow the sign to Basianshan.
You will get to Basian Villas in about 3.5 kms (the road is good, but with possible falling stones in some sections, be careful).
You should pay the entrance in Basianshan Recreation Area, which is not cheap (100 NT for the car, 150 NT each passenger). But, if you have the booking for Basian Villas (print it out!), it will be waived.
You can also reach Basianshan by bus and some walk. Bus #153 (from Taichung HSR Station, stops also in Taiwan Boulevard at Maple Garden/Chaoma, Mitsukoshi, Taichung City Hall) reaches Guguan. It takes 2 hrs.
Stop at Jiabaotai (the stop before Guguan and just after the Duming Bridge) and walk uphill on the paved road on the right for about 3.5 km, passing trough Basianshan Toll Gate. Only during weekends and holidays, bus #269 runs two times a day (10.40 and 13.40) from Guguan to Basianshan.
A taxi from Taichung to Basianshan should costs around 1,200 NTD.
If you want to spend 2 or 3 nights in a Taiwan mountain resort, with not excessive frills, but clean, cozy, and in a very nice and quiet environment, think about Basian Villas.
